What is cord blood?

A baby in the womb receives oxygen and nutrition from mother through placenta.
Umbilical cord is a critical lifeline connecting the baby and the mother; and the blood flowing inside the umbilical cord is umbilical cord blood, or cord blood.
Why is cord blood so precious? It is a rich source of multi-potent cells called stem cells.
Stem cells have a potential to develop into different types of cells which play vital roles in many organs throughout the body. Therefore, these cells can be used to treat various diseases such as leukemia, malignant anemia and cerebral palsy. Stem cells are also known to travel (i.e., migration or homing) to the damaged part of the body and help the healing process through the production of cytokines.
In addition, it is only at the time of birth when the cord blood can be collected.
